Each man was furnished with a bedstead and bedding on the same scale as British Troops, except that superior sheets and pillows, as issued to married soldiers' families, were provided them.

Tables and chaire were also furnished.

The "cell" doors were wide open or closed at the option of the occupants, never locked night or day - and the prisoners of war were allowed unrestricted intercourse and freedom within the four walls of the Detention Barracks, including exercise in the Yard, and use of the Gymnasium, from 6-30 a.m. to 7-30 p.m. One of their number instituted Gymnastic classes.

In addition, a level piece of ground outside the Detention Barracks was wired in, and those who wished to exercise there were allowed to do so from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, and from 2 p.m. to 4-45 p.m.

Further, each morning, those who wished to go for

a walk were taken out under escort, along the Bowen Road, Messing was provided on the scale drawn up for prisoners of war, the cooking being done by three of their number who were professional cooks.

The meals were properly served in the Central Hall before referred to, outside the "cella",

A room was given them to use as a small canteen which was run by one of themselves. Permission was given them to purchase from outside any articles of food or necessaries, including a limited quantity of bottled ale. No spirits were allowed.

They were allowed to smoke, to purchase newspapers, and to draw books from the Detention Barracks Library.

The light baggage of the prisoners was placed in their "cells", the heavy bagage, to which they were allow- ed free access, being stored under the eye of a sentry in the Detention Barrack workshed in the yard. This was no
